Greetings from the Great Plains foothills, where self reliance and learning how to do things yourself are a way of life. Through the years I have acquired many skills in wood working, building, metal working, and working the land. These are the things you will see here, projects that coincide with learning your own way of doing things, and not relying on someone else to do them for you. Creating with your hands, while accomplishing something you can see at the end of the day. Join the Journey!

I wondered when teaching treated post would start?
Does burning treated lumber help or hurt
Now I know ! I been desiring to build a barnett ,brd & batten. (Shed).
An excellent video on Board and Batten siding.
This looks awesome!!
I have a question; how long do I have to season my logs in order to be able to use this technique? I have maple . I will harvest them to fence my property which is 27 acres . Thank you
Some years back I use to wonder how in the heck telephone poles lasted so long compared to other types of wood. I mean some of them have been there for 50+ years. Then I watched this video and I remembered years ago one time I put my hand on a telephone pole that was newly erected and I remember my hand being sticky like it had oil or thin tar on it. Now it all makes sense, I always thought it was due to them being some kind of harder wood, but now I think they were using the exact same thing as you are. Funny thing, they government will tell you "you shouldn't put that oil on post, for the environment" all while doing exactly that when it comes to their own poles.
What a pleasant way of explaining and working. thank you sir, sincerely yours, Ernst, Amsterdam, the Netherlands
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
Could you explain the transition from the long boards to those cut at angle on gable end. Where exactly did u place your horizontal board? Seems that bottom bat should have been cut 2 inches shorter, so the horizontal board would cover the butt-joint of the vertical 10 inch boards or am I missing something? Did you use any flashing or anything around windows or anywhere? Great video -- getting ready to do my 30x44 barn w Cypress board & batten! Thanks
Finding post 8 inch diameter or bigger gets pricy. Pressure treated especially.
What beautiful country you live in. You a truly blessed. What town and or state is this?
Even if I square the blade to the sole, my circular saw won’t cut 90 degrees. I can’t find mistakes in my technique, even using a speed square as a guide. I noticed that the sole bends when it is set at less than max depth, so any downward pressure will cause the blade to cut at an angle. What accuracy is reasonable to expect from a circular saw?
Please cut to the chase. Nobody wants to watch a 15 minute video of dialogue with only 3 minutes of information. Next time, STFU and get down to business 🤨
Did you all have to debark each log before assembly? Or were you able to let it shed on its own ? Love the work. 💪💪
Just finished watching all your timber framing (Barn) video's. Thanks for the effort you go to, both in filming and construction. Love the beam drill, I have a James Swan but can see why the Miller's Fall is a better built drill. Say hello to Charlie for me
🎉 I hope very thing is well with you and your family.... hope to see a video soon...🎉🎉..... JJ....😊
Does this help against termites
How have those board and batons held up? I just bought a house with a historic two story coach house on the property that is beam and post with board and baton on the exterior. The previous owner did not maintain the building so their is a lot of leaking and water damage. I am debating taking the exterior off and waterproofing so I can insulate one day or just repairing the damage and using it as is.
What are the dimensions of your rafters. Great build
Сколько же лет этому станку для вращения сверла? Наверное он привезён из Голландии или Германии пионерами, которые осваивали северную Америку.
thhe sander is 110 or 220 volts
Do they stack? They look like they might be able to.
Why are you fighting with nature? Horizontal boards will work with gravity to steer water away, vertical will allow gravity to drive water "in-between".
@GreatPlainsCraftsman. Hey Tim not trying to be nosey but how much did the Timbers cost you in total when you sourced them from your local sawmill. Trying to get a budget together for my own Timber Frame structure.
Simple. Practical. Functional. Some videos show guys using digital protractors (whatever that is), complicated math, Japanese pull saws and chisels to make exotic wood joints in order to make "museum quality" sawhorses. Most of us just want a guide to make a pair of utility grade sawhorses. This video fits the bill. Thanks for posting this! Cheers.
Simply comment. NICE!
Where to buy the fabric? Cost? I have 3 Belgians in a sea of mud. Ohio. 23 tons and whadya get? Another day older and a little less wet 🎼
Ki ki at the end👍
Wow dude time for a new circular saw blade, that thing cuts so slow! Dull blades are like not wearing safety glasses! SMH!
OMG you're going to lose a limb without your riving knife and literally no safety gear at all, where are your gloves man?!?!?! SMH! I'm a weekend warrior and I go to all the OSHA safety committees!
I found that very useful..
Damn can we just get to the point
Would 3/4 or 4/4 be the minimum on the board? And could you use 1/2 for the batten? Gonna do it all on my mill.
Thanks for the video. Once the mixture is cured, does it still increase flammability of the posts? Where I live, the next wildfire is a “when” not “if” situation, and as much as I’d like to treat my own posts, something about fuel-soaked wood doesn’t sit right 😅
Did you attend The Shelter Institute?
I know this is an old video - hopefully the creator is still monitoring comments. The text and comments say 5deg splay on the legs but in the video, you can see the mitre angle was clearly set to 10deg at timepoint 1:56 just before the bevel was set to 15deg ... Is this some mathical effect of setting a compound saw I don't understand ? Which angle was actually used to build the horses in the video ?
Seems like over thinking when we have the caulking possibilities we do in 2023. But nice barn!
What are the dimensions of those posts? What are the dimensions of those beams?
Hey what is the tune, and by who, sounds Irish
I like this structure, good job! But man! Use a push stick when using the table saw!
I can't stop staring at his mustache 😅
what a peaceful place to live
Skip to 5:50 to get to the process
I did not see a bear in there with you.
No one that has done a video on yakisubi has mentioned how deep to burn or how hot. To get proper results.
Thank you for the video! This helped. I gotta comment on 3 things. 1- I like your dad frame on the wall. 2- I like your cat and I love how he/she loves you back. Very sweet. 3- How often do you get that you look SO MUCH like Pablo Escobar? 😅 Ok 4th and last one, cool mustache.
Una pregunta donde puedo conseguir las poleas dentadas
If the blade and the notch on the shoe are not aligned, is there no way to adjust it? I've read through the manual but in nowhere it mentions it. I am using a Makita 7-1/4 saw.
Hi, I gave you a like because I'm happy you took the time to make this video, thanks. If I could offer some constructive criticism, you'd probably get more subscribers and views if you cut out the random scenes of digging and carrying, etc. Life is short, I found myself doing a lot of skipping around. Anyway, fwiw. Thanks again!
What color stain did you use on your wood?
